Healthy School Lunches

This week Class 456 started a series of lessons on healthy eating.  Students were invited to discuss what we had in our lunchboxes currently, and we looked at the packaging of processed foods.  We were surprised to find some supposedly ‘healthy’ options were high in sodium.  Next week we are hoping to speak to our school Cowboy about their healthy food options for high performance athletes.  In my research, I found a great article from the Dietary Association of Australia with some healthy after-school snack options.  As many parents typically do not send nuts to school, because of allergy concerns, afterschool is a good time to make sure the kids are getting those nutrients.

  • Peanut butter sandwich, using wholegrain bread, and a banana
  • Low-fat yoghurt or low-fat cheese sticks with your child’s favourite seasonal fruit
  • Vegetable sticks and wholegrain crackers with hummus, salsa or tzatziki
  • Trail mix with sultanas, nuts and sunflower or pumpkin seeds
  • Fruit smoothie combining low-fat yoghurt, low-fat milk and seasonal fruit
  • Savoury muffin made with wholemeal flour and vegetables, such as grated carrot and zucchini or corn
  • Wholegrain crackers with low-fat cheese.
