Delta Dogs

One of Townsville South State School’s priorities is reading. As an extension to our comprehensive reading program, we are running the Delta Therapy Dogs’ Classroom Canines program in some classes.

This program involves a trained volunteer, who is Blue Card certified, coming into the classroom one morning a week with their dog for the children to take turns reading to the dog as part of independent or guided reading rotations. The program allows children to increase their reading skill and confidence by providing a novel, fun way for them to share their favourite books with a new, non-judgmental ‘listener’ in the dog.  Children may also pat the dog while reading if they wish.  Further information about the program is available at

Before the Classroom Canine program starts, all students in the class will take part in a “Dog Safe” lesson with the Coordinator of the Townsville Branch of Delta Dogs to make the children aware of safe behaviour around the dog. After the “Dog Safe” lesson, children will be able to participate in the Classroom Canines program.

For students to participate in the program the school permission form needs to be completed.
